North American Kestrel

kestrel in flight
baby kestrel

Both these birds are North American Kestrels, also known as sparrow hawks. A co-worker found the younger fellow on the ground outside our office. He told me, since I’m a known sucker for animals in distress. Our best guess is that the parents may be nesting somewhere on the large four-story building. It was a brutally hot day, so I brought the bird to save him(?) from death by dehydration. He seemed healthy, and just days from being able to fly.

I called the Carolina Raptor Center for advice. They put me in touch with a local wildlife rescue group, the Piedmont Wildlife Center. I took the bird to them; they promised to release him when he is ready.
