Paco Malo
In a break from tradition, Carnal Reason is featuring both its first music review, and its first guest author, Paco Malo. I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Malo since 1971. Some of his comments can be found throughout the blog. The discerning reader will note that PM and I disagree on various political issues. This is of no great importance; friendship takes precedence over such things. Differences of opinion are matters of reason, not of the heart.
The following was written by Dr. Malo.
Downtown Chicago
I know my youth is wearing thin
My last good shirt soaked in Bombay gin
I know tomorrow the shirt will dry
without a stain
but once again
There’ll be too much information runnin’ round my brain.
Gimmie one reason to stay here
Where power machine politics
Made its final stand;
Gimmie one reason to leave here
For the wharves of Port au Claire
With ma cheri to touch my hand.

Dear Editor,
There would be no need for war, and politics would be civil, were those who disagree on important issues of the day to conduct themselves following the example of gentlemanly disagreement we seek to set.
We are lucky not to be in charge of dividing up Jerusalem amongst followers of Yahweh and his two great prophets, Jesus and Mohammed. Maybe its the inevitable need to divide up land that leads to all these wars that get on my nerves.
Thank you for the opportunity to expand our pubic affairs point / counter-point into a new realm.
I thank him for putting up today’s offerings.
One thought of the moment: anyone not feeling humble right now should go take a look at a satellite picture of Hurricane Katrina as it rumbles up the Gulf of Mexico. Paraphrasing what Randy Newman said about a great flood in Southern Louisiana 75 or so ago, ‘Its gonna wash up away, it’s gonna wash away.’

Sorry, Randy.
Here, dear reader’s, are the lyrics to Randy Newman’s masterpiece “Louisiana 1927″ from his totally all-dat album Good Old Boys.
What has happened down here is the wind have changed
Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain
Rained real hard and rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of evangeline
The river rose all day
The river rose all night
Some people got lost in the flood
Some people got away alright
The river have busted through cleard down to plaquemines
Six feet of water in the streets of evangelne
Chorus
Louisiana, louisiana
They’re tyrin’ to wash us away
They’re tryin’ to wash us away
Louisiana, louisiana
They’re tryin’ to wash us away
They’re tryin’ to wash us away
President coolidge came down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The president say, “little fat man isn’t it a shame what the river has
Done
To this poor crackers land.”
Chorus
