A Ted Kennedy joke
TED KENNEDY is deeply troubled by the ethics of the Supreme Court nominee. Between 2001 and 2006, Samuel Alito, who is currently an appeals court judge, accepted $7,684,423 in “donations” from special interests who perhaps wanted the law tweaked in their favour. That included $28,000 from defence contractors, $42,200 from drug firms and a whopping $745,373 from lawyers and law firms.
No, wait. Those are Senator Kennedy’s conflicts of interest—or, rather, a brief excerpt from a long list compiled by the Centre for Responsive Politics. The lapse for which the senator berated Mr Alito was considerably less clear-cut.
The Economist
In honor of Senator Kennedy, here’s a joke. A woman interviews for a job with Kennedy.
Kennedy: “You realize that you’ll have to travel a lot.”
Woman: “That’s OK.”
Kennedy: “And that to save money we’ll have to share a hotel room.”
Woman: “OK.”
Kennedy: “And on some nights we will be having sex.”
Woman: “That’s all right.”
Kennedy: “Do you have any questions?”
Woman: “Well, if we are having sex, I might get pregnant and I wonder what arrangements you’ve made for obstetrics insurance, maternity leave, etc.”
Kennedy: “Don’t worry; we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Judge Alito sticks to a script pretty well, and Senators are not prosecutors. The system is flawed.
But at least everyone in the room, unlike at the White House and the Pentagon, are following the law, as set out in the U.S. Constitution.
It seems a wealthy Senator can get away with murder (manslaughter, at least).
Sychophants on one side, buffoons on the other, and I heard not one question about the Kelo vs New London travesty. A waste of my life to watch.
Senator Kennedy is doing his job under the Constitution, “advising and consenting” regarding a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. Ted Kennedy is not the issue; Judge Samuel Ilito, who may be the swing vote on the great constitutional law issues of the next two decades, is.
Kennedy’s advising and consenting amounted to a grandstanding smear campaign against a man who was clearly Kennedy’s intellectual and moral superior. Kennedy actually helped Alito’s case and came out looking the hypocrit himself. A “job” very well done indeed.
Whatever Senator Kennedy’s shortcomings, and if he indeed he did help Judge Alito, Kennedy was doing his job.
Deftly avoiding the Senate’s inquiries with “legalize”, as Alito clearly has done throughout the hearings so far, is the true Constitutional travesty here.
Best Ted Kennedy joke I’ve heard all month. Thanks.
