Best Friends

I decided to dump Ubuntu linux. My first replacement candidate was Suse Linux 10.0. I didn’t really like it. I installed it with the KDE desktop, and it is just too slow on my ancient machine. Worse, I could not get WebCalendar to install.

Next I’m going to try Fedora Core 5. I run FC 4 on an old machine at work, and it has been rock solid. These installs can chew up some time, so enjoy another fine cartoon from Nicolas Gurewitch.

  1. Glad to see another Linux user. I have tried Libranet, Debian, Mandrake the elder and Mandriva the younger, SuSE 10.0, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora two varieties, and now Mepis.

Ubuntu is nice but I liked Kubuntu better. My prinicpal problem was with GNOME. I am now running Mepis, a quick install which has native KDE and reading up on Gentoo which may be the next install. I expect Gentoo to be a much longer install than any of the others. But them I enjoy the installation process - just wish I knew enough to be a guru, which I am not.

    Good luck on FC5.

  2. Good luck with Gentoo. I like the idea of source based distros, but without a reasonably fast machine the compiles just take way too long. If you like installs and want to become a guru, take a look at linux from scratch or debian from scratch.
