Overkill
Radley Balko has released Overkill, his paper on the (ab)use of SWAT teams and paramilitary tactics in law enforcement. You can download the free PDF, or support his work by purchasing a bound copy. Be sure to check out the amazing interactive map of botched raids.

Know what scares me as much, maybe more, than the raids themselves? The way that even after someone is dead, the police reps always say “They followed standard procedure, so they’re not at fault and no action will be taken”.
Doesn’t seem to matter they went to the wrong damn place, or killed someone who was unarmed or whatever; as long as they ‘followed procedure’, they shouldn’t be held responsible.
What scares me the most is the complacent way the American people simply accept these abuses, or even clamor for more. Read some of the email Balko received to see what I mean.
