The tail end of the spear
A lovely story of how some clever statisticians saved the lives of American P-40 Warhawk pilots in WWII. No math required at all. Brilliant.

Great story on the importance of systematic data collection and insightful analysis thereof.
Though it did require some math, some of the men I studied under in graduate school helped developed the tests that were used in placing the right soldier in the right job during WWII. Again, an important contribution to the war effort.
