Monbiot vs the Moonbats

It’s fun to peer in on political family quarrels. The recent spat between Hillary, Obama, and Geffen has been getting al lot of attention, but for true comedy it’s hard to beat Monbiot vs the Moonbats. Here’s what my man Monbiot said in the Guardian:

To qualify as a true opponent of the Bush regime, you must also now believe that it is capable of magic. It could blast the Pentagon with a cruise missile while persuading hundreds of onlookers that they saw a plane. It could wire every floor of the twin towers with explosives without attracting attention and prime the charges (though planes had ploughed through the middle of the sequence) to drop each tower in a perfectly timed collapse. It could make Flight 93 disappear into thin air, and somehow ensure that the relatives of the passengers collaborated with the deception. It could recruit tens of thousands of conspirators to participate in these great crimes and induce them all to have kept their mouths shut, for ever.

Damn right. Everyone knows that Bush can do magic. He caused Katrina to strike New Orleans, and he caused global warming. Really real members of the reality-based community, the ones who haven’t sold out, will tell you that Bush is the antichrist. And don’t even get them started on Cheney.

What’s funny is that the moonbats are about ready to try Monbiot for heresy. Hat tip to Irrational Optimism for the link.

  1. Please, tell me you’re kidding. Please. I must be relapsing into my “Mr. Literal” syndrome that was a cornerstone of the teasing I took when I was younger. Nonetheless:

Mombiot is attributing conspiracy theory foolishness to we liberal progressives who find this stuff just as absurd as the right does.

What point do these neo-con hyperbolic rhetorical fictions serve in serious debate about the important issues of the day?

Okay, I’m calmer now. Let me ennumerate my positions on the matters discussed in this blog.

If Senator Obama, Senator Clinton, and media mogul David Geffen want to have a pillow fight, we should be focusing on the fact that this sort of behavior takes away from Obama’s and Clinton’s seriousness as presidential candidates.

I am an opponent of the policies and political conduct of our current President. I do not, however, believe he is capable of magic.

The World Trade Center Complex was destroyed by terrorists who took command of fully fueled jetliners and flew them into the twin towers. Thousands of innocent lives were lost, including those of incredibly brave New York City fire department and police department personnel.

Similarly, a fully fueled jetliner was flown into part of the sprawling Pentagon complex. Part of the Pentagon was serious damaged and again, innocent lives were lost and heroism displayed.

The final plane in this coordinated terrorist attack never made it to it’s target destination because certain passengers overpowered the hijackers and the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, killing all aboard. Once again, great heroism under pressure was displayed.

Our current President did not cause Hurricane Katrina to hit New Orleans and the surrounding area — I know you’re being rhetorical with one, I just don’t think it’s rhetoric that is called for given the scope of the ongoing tragedy. And don’t get me started on the Army Corp of Engineers role in creating the ensuing disaster in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes.

Our current President did not cause global warming. I’m becoming prouder and prouder that I ride a bike and use buses to get around. Whatever is going with our atmosphere, if carbon dioxide emmission are part of the problem, I’m part of the solution.

You are an acknowledged atheist. While I lean toward Taoism, and find a lot of what Jesus taught quite edifying, I think the “Anti-Christ” is about as real as the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus.

Your right, don’t get me started about Dick Cheney. History and karma will take care of him.

Monbiot can say whatever he wants, just don’t expect me to take him seriously.

As I’ve argued before, divisive political rhetoric like this post disserves us all by further polarizing our political landscape.

  2. When activist environmentalistsstopped the planned construction of the flood gates in the 70s/80s that everyone agreed would prevent a storm surge from filling Lake Pontchetrain and thus overwhelming the levies, they effectively chose the health and well being of the snail darter over that of the City of New Orleans and its people. I think that was a bad choice. I’m pretty sure Bush didn’t have anything to do with that, but I could be wrong.

  3. Dr. Malo,

A little context. Monbiot is the veritable voice of reason in his ongoing dispute with the moonbats. Though Monbiot is very much a man of the left, he has gone on record as saying the 9/11 conspiracy theorists are a pack of idiots.

I am with him on this, as you are.

Monbiot is accused of being a sellout because he does not attribute magical powers to BushHitler and kkkompany. Much of the left is obsessed with litmus tests of ideological purity. Senator Clinton is called on to apologize for remarks she made prior to invasion of Iraq. Monbiot is called upon to give credence to the ravings of fools. Everyone is called upon to give lip service to anthropogenic global warming, else we are deniers.

I am enjoying the spectacle of far-left leaning Monbiot being attacked by the drooling-idiot left for stating the obvious. I find this so amusing that I have written two posts about it. The targets of my mockery are the droolers, not Monbiot, so I adopt their tone and rhetoric and have some fun with it.

  4. Two replies:

    Dear pwyll,

Thank you for providing this important background information regarding Monbiot.

And “kkkompany” — I just love that one.

    Dear CCL,

Thank for adding this important additional information on the “no win” situation that American politics places the Army Corp of Engineers in. My real beef, and the Corp. is just the easiest target, is the fact that New Orleans was not below sea level when it was established. It is the destruction of the essential flood plain all the way up the Mississippi River that put Orleans and surrouding parishes in the precarious position that lead, in large part, to the post-Katrina disaster.
