A bit of fun
A game bloggers play is creating and spreading memes. The Thinking Blog started one called 5 Blogs that Make Me Think, aka the Thinking Blogger Award. Scott Thong at Buuuuurrrrning Hot listed Carnal Reason as one of the blogs that makes him think. I am pleased to hear it.
Scott blogs from Malaysia. I am reminded of a time long ago, before the Web even existed. The internet was email, usenet, ftp, and gopher. One day I got email from Japan, and I thought that was so cool. The world had shrunk. That was about twenty years ago. I don’t remember what that mail was about, or even what kind of computer I was using. Funny thing is, after so many years, a link from Malaysia is still cool.
Part of the deal is that I now list five blogs that make me think. In no particular order, I give you these.
The Agitator. If there were a Pulitzer for blogging, I believe Radley Balko would deserve one for his outstanding work criticizing the militarization of American police. The so-called war on drugs has become a war on American citizens, and it is being fought with military equipment and tactics. Officer safety now demands that SWAT teams serve even minor warrants, and citizen safety be damned. To Serve and Protect has become To Terrorize and Subdue. I bitterly regret that it is so.
Anarchaia. Mostly links with short, often cryptic commentary, but these are links to some of the most interesting things going on in computer science, programming, and the internet. Consistently fascinating and informative.
David Thompson. A blog about culture, ideas, and comic books; what more could anyone ask for? Mr Thompson is very fine essayist.
A Neighborhood of Infinity. Outstanding math blogging, with exceptional Haskell related posts.
Shire Network News. OK, it’s a podcast; that’s just a blog you can listen to while driving. The British lion still roars in this mix of Churchill with a touch of Monty Python. Blog news and commentary on the war, with a sense of humor, by people who still believe in the West.
