The Great Clovis
I saw that over on Samizdata one of the contributers recommended reading some Saki:
Saki (aka H. Munro). If you have not read any Saki, well you should repair that omission immediately. Many people, including PG Wodehouse, Noel Coward, Evelyn Waugh and others were inspired by the brilliant, cruel wit of Saki. I have my old friend and intellectual mentor, the late Chris R. Tame, to thank for encouraging me to read Saki. If you are ever in need of cheering up, read any one of Saki’s short stories. Absolute magic.
I second his recommendation, wholeheartedly. Saki’s stories are typically short, surprising, funny, and often cruel. There are several recurring characters; my favorite is Clovis, a young gentleman with too much time on his hands. The Unrest Cure features Clovis in rare form.

Thanks for the recommendation. It’s on the top of my list. I still remember how inspired I was when you turned me on to Borges.
