But if it be a sin to covet honour

Reason Magazine is running an article that begins If Florida had a Homeric epithet (think Hector, tamer of horses) it would be “Florida, wrecker of elections.” To Hades with “the Sunshine State.”

I’m not sure I understood the point of the article, but it got me looking for an old souvenir, one I hold dear. I used to live in Palm Beach County, Florida. I still have my voter registration card from the 2000 elections. I keep it as proof that I was one of those of whom the poet wrote

From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that casts his vote with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in Palm Beach now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That voted with us upon election 2000 day.

I helped to fight off Al Gore that day. I am smiling still.

  1. Woe be the Democrat persuing presidential honors on St. Chrispin’s Day.

  2. I think, in terms of the electoral college, I offset your vote.
